"Mike recently hosted a trivia night for my wife’s birthday with ~15 of our friends. Mike did a great job and everyone had a lot of fun! I highly recommend it as a fun event with friends in remote places. Definitely worth it!" - Nick Joseph, Citi

About (from the owner)

My name is Michael Wade and I am the owner/operator of Trivia Throwdown Online LLC (TTO). TTO is not your traditional trivia company.  We strive to emulate the feel of classic bar trivia for you and your friends, family, and colleagues alike from the comfort of your own home. We offer private online events such as birthday parties, work happy hours, teambuilding, family reunions, etc. The service is great for small groups of ranging from a few people up to approximatley 80 total players. The content is fun and approachable but what it really does is get people engaged and talking with one another, which a lot of people are missing being home all the time.

TTO started as virtual trivia games for my friends when the quarantine began in March 2020. At the time, it was really just an excuse to get that human contact that we were all so desperately missing, and people seemed to really enjoy the fellowship.  The trivia is unlike typical trivia. It emphasizes interaction and engagement within the team and isn’t really about winning or losing, which is reflected in my questions. Questions include surveyed based responses, memory recall, strategic betting, and a number of other spins on traditional Q & A. There's no multiple choice and no reward for answering questions quickly.  Those things stifle collaboration which goes against the collaboration and teamwork we are trying to foster.

In June of 2020, I was approached by a friend a lawyer at a firm here in Richmond, VA.  He told me a story that I would end up hearing over and over again. “Our virtual happy hours are pretty painful; we are desperate for something that’s fun and engaging that everyone can do from home.” At TTO, we recognize the difficulties of staying connected during remote work.  Because of this we work with clients to build a personalized experience that can engage participants, regardless of their geographical location. This allows teams to better relax in a virtual environment.

Trivia Throwdown Online LLC: TTO is a virtual trivia startup company designed to foster cooperation, teamwork, and personal connections, despite being fully virtual.  TTO was featured in the New York Times in an article covering how startups were helping people get through the Covid-19 pandemic. To date, we’ve got well over 1500+ clients and are continuing to see the business grow in new and interesting ways, every month, both domestically and internationally. If you have questions or want to book a game, I’d love to share more about who we are and how we can help liven up your next gathering.

FAQ

How do I set up a game for my group?

Email us directly at TriviaThrowdownOnline@gmail.com to get scheduled!

How is this different from typical bar trivia?

The biggest difference is, of course, the fact that it’s online, and from the comfort of your own home. But going beyond that, the biggest difference is the emphasis on group interaction and engagement. We curate our questions with the goal in mind to encourage as much collaboration (within your group) as possible to highlight the strength of the group, not the individual.

How many players can play at a time?

TTO can easily accommodate groups up to 80. Ideally, for the best experience for you and your group we recommend 12-25 players/screens. Singles count as 1, couples count as 2, families (3 or more) count as 2.

Why not larger groups?

The value of this experience is the ability to interact and engage with the people you’re playing with. If you’ve ever been on a video or phone conference call with large numbers everyone ultimately has to be muted and the interaction within the group is minimal. The real value of TTO is the ability to engage, have fun, and be active participants in the entire experience, start to finish.

How long does the game last?

The experience is scheduled to last roughly 65 - 75 minutes but might run slightly longer depending on the timeliness of responses and ongoing conversations. The game can be shortened upon request.

My group had a great time, can we play again?

We have curated dozens of completely unique versions of trivia and are actively writing new questions/content all the time. We love repeat business and would love to have you and your group back as often as you like!

What do I (and my group members) need to play?

The game is played via Zoom, so all you need is a basic Zoom account (which is free). If you’re in the same room with someone you’re playing with (like a spouse or roommate) you can play on the same account/screen.

How do questions get asked & answered?

We read the question aloud to everyone in the main room twice. We will then open the breakout rooms (you’ll see a prompt and select “join breakout room ___”), you and your team will go discuss your answer(s). Wait until you get to your rooms to discuss answers, you don’t want to help the other teams! You’ll have roughly 90 seconds for each question, with additional time for the multi part questions.

We’ll close the rooms and you can either return to the main room manually or wait until the timer expires and you’ll be sent back to the main room automatically. At that point, your teams “caller” will submit their answers directly to me via the built in chat function, which is very simple. We’ll record everyone’s responses, read the answer allowed, and offer up any additional information needed (ex. who got it right, partial credit, etc.)

How do we keep score?

We track all the scoring and will share the scoreboard periodically throughout the game. You don’t have to do anything except sit back and enjoy!
